Transpersonal Psychology and Psychotherapy
Transpersonal Psychology literally means the study of the soul (total psychological energy or life energy) through, across, or beyond the personal. It blends modern psychology and world spiritual traditions in service of understanding human development and ultimate psychological and spiritual health. Jack Kornfield describes Transpersonal Psychology well in the introduction to his book, “A Path With Heart.” He says:
“…the universal must be wedded to the personal to be fulfilled in our spiritual life. We are human beings, and the human gate to the sacred is our own body, heart, and mind, the history from which we’ve come, and the closest relationships and circumstances of our lives. If not here, where else could we bring alive justice, compassion, and liberation? The universal truths of spiritual life can come alive only in each particular and personal circumstance.”
Issues addressed through a transpersonal lens in psychotherapy could include crises or questions related to identity, career change, near death experiences, altered-state experiences, meaning making, and many more. Mindfulness and body awareness practices might be explored in session or assigned.
